Please join us in welcoming Ilona Szigethy, our new Laboratory Safety Officer at CUMC. Ilona comes to us from Indiana State University, where she had over 3 years experience as an Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety Assistant.
She has an MS in Occupational Health & Safety as well as two BS degrees in Environmental Health and Safety Management.
Ilona will have responsibility for research labs in the Black Building, Eye Institute and Eye Institute Annex. She can be reached at

Also please welcome Mr. Terrence Jaimungal (“Jai”). Jai has recently joined Columbia University as an Industrial Hygienist. Born and raised in New York City he worked for the United States Air Force for almost fourteen years as an Industrial Hygienist. His responsibilities included work in both general and construction industry including health care, transportation, communications, environment, industrial hygiene, and occupational safety. In addition Jai has experience in the fields of emergency planning and response, particularly with chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) hazards.
Jai received his Master of Science degree in Environmental Health in 2006 from Old Dominion University and a Bachelor degree in Business Administration from Western New England College.
As an Industrial Hygienist Jai’s goal at Columbia University is to ensure a healthful and safe work environment is maintained for faculty, staff, students, neighbors and surrounding communities.
